State to Swelter Through Hottest Day of Summer
Sydneysiders brace for a scorching summer day with temperatures soaring past 40C, prompting fire bans and safety warnings across the region

Sydney: It’s going to be a hot one! Sydneysiders are gearing up for the hottest day of summer on Friday, with temps expected to hit over 40C in some spots.
The forecast shows the city reaching around 38C, and there might even be some severe thunderstorms rolling in later. The Bureau of Meteorology is keeping a close eye on things.
Out west, it’s going to be even hotter, with Penrith possibly hitting 41C. Other areas like Singleton and Maitland are also in for a scorcher, with temps soaring to 42C.
Newcastle and Tamworth aren’t escaping either, as they’re looking at highs around 40C. It’s definitely a day to stay cool and hydrated!
With the heat cranking up, the NSW Rural Fire Service has put a total fire ban in place for greater Sydney and the Hunter regions. They’re warning folks about the extreme fire danger due to the hot and windy conditions.
But don’t worry, relief is on the way! By Friday evening, temperatures are expected to drop to a much more manageable 26C. Saturday should feel a lot nicer.
Elsewhere in NSW and the ACT, places like Wollongong will peak at 35C, while Canberra will be a cooler 29C. Meanwhile, Victoria is still dealing with bushfires, even as their temps drop to around 22C in Melbourne.
