Hexham: It’s a heartbreaking situation. Sir Keir Starmer is stepping up to look into whether teens should be recognized as victims of domestic abuse. This comes after the tragic murder of 15-year-old Holly Newton.
During a session in Parliament, Starmer expressed his gratitude for being able to discuss Holly’s case. She was brutally killed by her ex-boyfriend, Logan MacPhail, who was just 16 at the time.
Logan stalked Holly for an hour before attacking her in an alleyway, stabbing her 36 times. It’s just awful. Local MP Joe Morris called it a “tragic murder” and urged the Prime Minister to consider lowering the age for recognizing domestic abuse victims.
Starmer acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, noting the rise in violence in teenage relationships over the past decade. He emphasized the need to protect young girls and said it’s crucial to address this matter as soon as possible.
Logan, from Birtley in Gateshead, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 17 years. The judge pointed out that he couldn’t accept the end of his relationship with Holly, which led to his violent outburst.
Currently, UK law states that domestic abuse can only be recognized if both individuals are 16 or older. The Home Office previously decided to keep this age limit to avoid confusion with child abuse cases.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has mentioned that the government will specifically look into this issue to ensure proper recording of violence in teenage relationships. Holly’s mother, Micala Trussler, has spoken out about the controlling behavior in her daughter’s relationship, highlighting the need for change.
