Stanley: A sad story unfolded when Barry Lumsden, a 75-year-old man, lost his life after falling from his wheelchair. This happened while he was trying to cross the A693. Barry had already faced a lot in life, including losing a leg in a motorbike accident a few years back.

He passed away on September 22, just weeks after the fall. The coroner mentioned that this incident was “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” Barry had suffered multiple hip fractures, which led to his hospital stay, and he later developed broncho-pneumonia.

During the inquest, it was confirmed that his death was accidental. Barry was known for his strong spirit and sense of humor. His wife, Linda, shared how he loved gardening and DIY projects, always helping others out.

Linda recalled how Barry was a tough guy, independent and stubborn. They had been married for 53 years and had a close-knit family, including grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Barry was a fighter, and even after losing his leg, he worked hard to regain his strength.

On the day of the accident, Barry was out in his wheelchair, something he did a few times a week. A neighbor witnessed the fall and said Barry had tried to stop suddenly when a child ran in front of him, causing his wheelchair to tip over.

After the fall, a passerby helped him up, and Barry insisted he was fine. But when he got home, he cried out in pain, leading Linda to call for an ambulance. Despite his previous health issues, his family said he had been doing well before that day.

In the hospital, Barry’s condition worsened, and he was moved to a cardiac care ward. The doctors did their best, but sadly, he didn’t improve. The coroner noted that while Barry died from broncho-pneumonia, it was a result of the fall and his time in the hospital.

It’s heartbreaking to think about all he went through. The coroner concluded that Barry’s death was due to an accident, highlighting the challenges he faced throughout his life. He truly was a remarkable man.
