North London: Enfield Council is spending a whopping £600,000 on security. This is to keep squatters out of two tower blocks that are waiting to be demolished.
These buildings, Cheshire House and Shropshire House, have serious safety issues. Engineers cut off the gas supply months ago due to a dangerous leak.
Residents had to use outdoor showers during winter. It’s been tough for them, especially since the towers have been without gas for so long.
The council started moving residents out while planning the demolition. They offered leaseholders a bit more than market value to buy them out.
MyLondon found out about the £600,000 security bill through a Freedom of Information request. A security team is stationed outside both buildings around the clock.
Residents have expressed their frustration about the slow process of finding new homes. Hivron Bay, 34, who lived in Shropshire House, shared her struggles with the long wait.
She even mentioned feeling suicidal because of the delays. Edmonton MP Kate Osamor also voiced her disappointment about the slow evacuation.
Cllr Ayten Guzel responded to the concerns about the spending. He emphasized the importance of keeping remaining residents safe in these mostly empty buildings.
He mentioned that the security team conducts regular patrols to prevent unauthorized access and antisocial behavior. The council is urging remaining leaseholders to reach out for help with their moves.
With the demolition planned for this year, the security costs are likely to rise even more. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved.
