St Andrews ‘supporting’ student accusing Neil Gaiman of sexual assault

St Andrews: The university is stepping up to support a student who has accused Neil Gaiman of sexual assault. They’re providing her with counseling and assistance, which is great to see.

This all started when a report came out in New York Magazine. It mentioned that an English literature student at the university had made serious allegations against Gaiman.

Interestingly, Gaiman received an honorary degree from St Andrews back in 2016. After the student shared her experience with the university’s head, Dame Sally Mapstone, she asked them to reconsider that honor.

Mapstone was sympathetic but seemed unsure about what to do next. She mentioned that some board members might want proof of prosecution before taking any action.

Gaiman, known for his works like Good Omens and Stardust, has denied the allegations. He insists he has never engaged in non-consensual activities.

However, seven other women have also come forward with allegations against him, including one who claimed he assaulted her while she was babysitting his child.

In that instance, she said he invited her to take a bath in his garden and then joined her naked, which is pretty shocking. The women involved have said that while they called him “master,” the specifics of consent weren’t clear before things escalated.

Gaiman’s team has stated that BDSM practices are lawful among consenting adults, but the situation is still very complicated.

A police report was filed against him in January 2023, but the investigation was dropped, which leaves a lot of questions hanging.

Gaiman is famous for his books like Coraline and American Gods, and since these allegations came to light, some of his upcoming projects have reportedly been impacted.

The university has expressed its support for the student, emphasizing the importance of backing survivors of sexual abuse. They’re committed to her welfare and will keep a close eye on the situation.
