Albion: So, there’s a special election coming up in February to fill the House District 24 seat in Maine. This spot opened up after Democrat Joseph Perry had to resign. He was just re-elected but got picked to be the state treasurer.
House District 24 covers parts of Bangor, Brewer, Orono, and all of Veazie. The election is set for Tuesday, February 25. The Maine Department of the Secretary of State announced it, and political parties will be nominating their candidates by January 10.
If you’re not part of a party and want to run, you’ll need to gather 50 to 80 signatures from registered voters in the district. Those signatures have to be certified by municipal clerks before you submit them, and they’re due by 5 p.m. on January 10.
For anyone thinking about being a write-in candidate, you’ve got until January 14 to declare. You can get the necessary forms by reaching out to the elections division of the Secretary of State.
Interestingly, former Maine House Majority Leader Mo Terry was expected to take the treasurer role without any competition. But Perry decided to jump in at the last minute after hearing that Republicans would back him.
The person who wins this election will finish out the rest of Perry’s two-year term. It’s going to be an interesting race!
