Mount Isa: The southern hemisphere’s biggest rodeo is back on track! The Mount Isa Rodeo, a beloved event for 65 years, is getting a $1 million lifeline after facing some tough times.
Just a couple of months ago, it entered voluntary administration, but thanks to a shout-out from Mayor Peta MacRae, the state government stepped in to help. They’re using part of a $2 million grant to support the local council and keep the rodeo alive.
This funding is crucial, especially with Glencore planning to close its copper operation in Mount Isa by 2025. The rodeo is a big deal for the local economy, usually bringing in around $10 million each year.
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie expressed his excitement, saying the rodeo is saved and will be even better in the future. The local council is now figuring out how to best use the funds to ensure the rodeo thrives.
However, there are some worries about whether $1 million will be enough. Reports say the rodeo owes about $1.9 million to over 80 creditors. Tourism Minister Andrew Powell mentioned he was surprised by the changing figures he received from the administrators.
Despite the challenges, Mayor MacRae is optimistic. She reached out to the government for help, and now half of that grant will go directly to the rodeo. The rest will support local economic efforts.
Creditors are set to meet by January 2025 to discuss the way forward. MacRae believes they should accept the offer and move on quickly to ensure the rodeo happens.
After a tough couple of years with ticket sales dropping by 40% due to COVID and rising living costs, the rodeo is still a major draw. MacRae is confident that by August 2025, the rodeo will be ready to welcome visitors back.
