Southend: So, there’s this plan to turn part of the Royal Hotel into flats. David Gutwirth, the director of the architects behind it, says everything’s been pretty steady since they submitted their ideas last year. He’s been chatting with Southend Council all along.
They first shared the news about the 17 flats back in January. David believes these new homes will really help out the High Street. Sounds promising, right?
By the way, the lower three floors of the hotel are still a music venue. Terry Garrett and his sons took over the place in 2015, and it’s been buzzing ever since.
They’re keeping the basement bar, restaurant, and ballroom as they are. The neighboring Princess Caroline House, which is now offices, will be turned into flats. Quite a transformation!
David mentioned that the plans are heading to the committee in February for review. He’s optimistic since the Royal Hotel and Princess Caroline are both listed buildings, which means they have to be careful with changes.
He reassured everyone that sound-proofing will be added to the flats to keep the music lovers happy. No one wants noise complaints ruining a good gig!
David is committed to this project and thinks it’ll really give the High Street a boost. We’ll have to wait for more updates in February!
