Southend: The 23A and 23B bus routes are coming back. They will connect Leigh to Southend Airport and the nearby business park. This change will make travel easier for residents in the west of Southend.
Both routes will start at Leigh train station. They will go through Elmsleigh Drive, Belfairs, and Eastwood. The 23A will end at the airport, while the 23B will continue to the Airport Business Park.
Residents and councillors have worked hard for years to bring back these routes. The plan is to put the routes out for tender in March. If all goes well, the new service could start by July.
The project will cost around £450,000, with funding from the Department for Transport. Councillor Stephen Aylen has been a strong advocate for this change. He believes it will greatly improve travel options in the area.
Aylen said this will help connect different parts of Southend. He has been pushing for this for twenty years and is hopeful it will finally happen. The new bus service will be especially beneficial for the elderly, making it easier for them to get around without needing a car.
Paul Collins, a local councillor, mentioned that the process to secure a bus company will take over three months. The earliest the new service could start is July 2025.
