Southampton: Hundreds of tradespeople gathered in London on Monday. They demanded the government impose harsher penalties for tool thieves.
The Traders United rally featured vans with slogans like “every tool stolen is a job lost.” They drove through Parliament Square, honking their horns.
In Southampton, tradespeople shared with the Echo how tool theft affects them. Losing tools can cost thousands and stop them from working.
Kevin Rogers, from KR Carpentry and Construction, had his van broken into four years ago. He lost £7,000 worth of tools.
He said, “Having a van robbed is soul destroying. It takes time to recover.” He supports tougher penalties for tool theft.
Police are trying to find the owners of tools suspected to be stolen. They were discovered in a shop in the city center.
Mark Lloyd, a carpenter with over 30 years in Southampton, said tool theft impacts livelihoods. “Vans are getting broken into everywhere,” he noted.
He added, “If you can’t afford to replace your tools, you have to use credit. It’s devastating for families.”
Tommy Lee from South Hampshire Builders also faced tool theft. His van was broken into, and a £700 chop saw was stolen.
He believes harsher penalties are a good idea but worries about police catching the thieves.
Labour MP Amanda Martin proposed reforms in December. Her Theft of Tools of Trade (Sentencing) Bill aims to recognize the significant harm caused by tool theft.
