London: So, the escalators at Cutty Sark DLR station are finally getting fixed! After a petition with over 2,000 signatures, Transport for London (TfL) has stepped up and secured the funds to replace all four escalators. It’s about time, right?

This station connects Greenwich to places like Bank and Canary Wharf, but all the escalators have been out of service. The petition started back in December, and folks have been really vocal about needing those repairs done ASAP.

One of the petition organizers, Maureen O’Mara, has lived in the area for 40 years. She’s seen the issues firsthand and isn’t too confident in TfL’s past promises. She’s pushing for more public pressure to get things moving.

Then there’s Simon Fagerstorm, who uses the station three times a week for work. He mentioned how tough it is for people, especially those with kids or heavy bags, to climb all those steps. It’s exhausting and not safe at all.

Maureen also pointed out that it could lead to accidents. Imagine someone tripping on those steps with a crowd behind them. It’s a disaster waiting to happen, and thankfully, it hasn’t happened yet.

Labour Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan called the station’s condition ‘shameful’ at a council meeting. Simon, who moved to the UK four years ago, said the escalators have barely worked during that time, making it a real hassle for him.

He’s got a disability, so it’s even more of a struggle. The elevator is tiny, and if there are other people or trolleys, you could be waiting ages. It’s just a mess.

TfL is working with the DLR operator to keep everyone updated about the situation. They’ve set up a one-way system and have extra staff around to help commuters who don’t want to use the small lift. Plus, they’re improving signage to guide people to the nearby Greenwich DLR station.

Tom Page, the DLR General Manager, expressed regret over the ongoing escalator issues. He assured everyone that they’re on it and will share a timeline for the repairs once everything is finalized.
