South London Borough: From Most Depressing to Most Affordable Living

Croydon is known for its bright green trams and a large Ikea. Recently, it was called the most depressing area in London. But now, it has a new title: the most affordable place to live in the city.

Research from Zoopla shows that the average house price in Croydon is £417,800. With an average household income of £84,800, this makes it the best place in London for house value compared to earnings.

Despite this good news, Croydon still struggles with its reputation. Many TikTok users have made jokes about the area. One person said it "smells like weed," while another called it "not a very nice place."

However, some locals shared positive thoughts. One man described Croydon as "cosmopolitan" and "cultural." Others agreed, saying it is a "lovely place" and "nice and safe."

On Reddit, one user called Croydon "the jewel of the South." Yet, another joked that only a mother could love it. Still, many appreciate Croydon for its easy access to central London and cultural spots like Surrey Street Market.

Croydon also offers plenty of green spaces, including Wandle Park and Addington Hills. While some Londoners feel unhappy with life in the city, many still choose to stay.

A recent survey revealed that 65% of Londoners think housing has worsened. Many describe London as "expensive," while others mention its diversity and cultural aspects.

Croydon remains attractive for homebuyers. In January 2024, it was named the most affordable place to buy in London. Shared ownership homes start at just £76,000.

Data shows that the average property price in Croydon is £448,226. Most sales were for terraced houses, with an average price of £468,438. If you want to own a home, Croydon might be the right choice for you.
