Seoul: Yoon Suk Yeol has made history as the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested. This happened after a tense standoff on Wednesday when investigators finally broke into his residence.

It all kicked off with a pre-dawn operation by anti-corruption investigators. This was their second attempt to arrest him, and it led to a nearly three-hour standoff with his supporters and security team.

Eventually, hundreds of law enforcement officers stormed the presidential residence, and they announced that he was successfully detained. Yoon had been hiding out in his home for weeks, dodging a summons from the Corruption Investigation Office.

Before his arrest, he recorded a defiant video message. He said he would comply with the warrant but claimed that the “rule of law has completely collapsed” in South Korea.

Things got really messy when Yoon declared martial law back on December 3. He argued that he was fighting against an “anti-state” opposition that was blocking his agenda.

Now, the anti-corruption agency is teaming up with the police and military to figure out if his martial law declaration was an attempted insurrection. This situation is definitely shaking up the political scene in South Korea.
