Somerset: The local council plans to raise taxes by 7.5% in 2025. This increase is the maximum allowed for the upcoming budget year.
Cllr Bill Revans, the council leader, warned earlier that tax rates might exceed the 5% cap. This has been a concern for many residents.
Recently, Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, confirmed this increase in Parliament. She mentioned that the government made this decision carefully.
Rayner stated that small tax increases help prevent councils from facing financial issues. However, they must also consider taxpayers’ interests.
A spokesperson for Somerset Council noted that this increase won’t fully cover the budget gap. They will rely on a Capitalisation Direction for additional support.
This assistance allows councils to sell assets or borrow money to manage their budgets. Cllr Revans said they will review the implications before finalizing the budget.
