Durham: So, here’s the scoop. Durham County Council is asking folks for their thoughts on housing issues. They’re doing a big review of how they allocate social housing.

Right now, they have this choice-based lettings scheme for social housing, but it’s been the same since 2017. And let me tell you, the demand is way higher than what they can actually provide. It’s a tough situation with the housing crisis hitting everywhere.

In the last four years, thousands more people in County Durham have joined the waiting list. A recent report showed that the number of active applicants jumped from about 7,686 in 2020 to nearly 11,000 in 2024. That’s a big increase!

And waiting times? They’ve shot up too, with fewer homes available. It’s getting pretty rough out there.

Experts think the cost-of-living crisis is a big part of the problem. As people settle into their homes, there are fewer social housing options opening up, which means longer waits for those on the list.

To tackle this, Durham County Council is planning a thorough review to make sure housing is given out fairly and consistently.

Councillor James Rowlandson mentioned that the waiting list has grown by about 30% since 2020. With more people looking for homes and fewer properties to go around, it’s a real challenge.

He added that with rising living costs, higher house prices, and increasing rents, we’re facing a national housing crisis that needs urgent attention. Everyone deserves a decent place to live.

They’re really encouraging everyone to share their thoughts. Whether you’re a resident, a tenant, or even part of a housing association, your input can help improve the process and make sure homes go to those who need them most.

As part of this consultation, the council wants to hear opinions on six key issues, including how to access the housing register and how to prioritize those who are homeless or at risk.
