A big winter storm is rolling in, covering a large part of central and southern Virginia. It should start hitting around 7 p.m. Friday. At first, we’ll see light snow, but by 11 p.m., it’s expected to really pick up. The National Weather Service thinks we could get about 4-6 inches of snow here.
The snow should start winding down after dawn on Saturday and be gone by the afternoon. Some areas in far southwestern Virginia already saw snow starting around 5 p.m.
Local officials are getting ready for the storm. In Petersburg, they treated the main roads ahead of time. First responders and public works will be on duty throughout the storm to keep things safe.
The city is advising folks to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Less traffic means road crews can do their job better. They’re also asking people to use off-street parking when they can.
This storm is different from last weekend’s, which hit northern Virginia hard. This time, central and southern Virginia will feel the brunt. The snow accumulation will vary, with Richmond and Petersburg being the dividing line between 3-4 inches and 4-6 inches.
Snow bands are stretching from Louisa County all the way to the Virginia-North Carolina line, with the heaviest bands running from Farmville through Petersburg. If you have to drive, make sure to check 511Virginia for updates before heading out.
This is a developing story.
