Southern Ontario faces ongoing snow squall warnings, impacting travel and road conditions as heavy snowfall persists in affected areas

Ontario: It’s been a tough few days for the snowbelt areas. Intense snow squalls have led to blizzard warnings in some spots. While those warnings have lifted, the snow isn’t done yet.
On Friday, the lake-effect snow is shifting north, which means road conditions could change quickly, especially in cottage country. Snow squall warnings are still in place as we wrap up the week.
By Friday morning, expect those snow squalls to move back north. Whiteout conditions will likely stick around for most of the day, especially near Barrie, impacting Highway 400 and Highway 11.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has warned that driving in the heaviest snow squalls could be really tough, even nearly impossible at times. So, it’s a good idea to check the highway conditions before you head out.
Highway 1 around Sault Ste. Marie will also see some heavy lake-effect snow throughout the day. If you’re in the eastern parts of Georgian Bay, like Gravenhurst, brace for another 20-40 cm of snow before things start to calm down.
Things should get better by Saturday as the winds change and a new airmass moves in. Looking ahead, we might see some fluctuating temperatures for the rest of December, with more mild days than cold ones. But keep an eye out for a potential cold snap in early January.
