Right after midnight, a spokesperson for the airport said they had to shut down for snow clearing and safety. They really want everyone to check their website or contact their airline for the latest flight info.
And it’s not just Birmingham. Bristol Airport had to pause operations for several hours on Saturday night because of heavy snow, but they managed to reopen around 11 PM.
Oh, and there’s more! An airport rep mentioned that there could be “knock-on delays” into Sunday since some planes are out of position. So, it’s best to check with your airline if you’re flying.
Meanwhile, Wiltshire Police are saying the weather is causing a bit of chaos everywhere, and Avon and Somerset Police warned about significant road issues in parts of Somerset. They’re advising people to only travel if it’s really necessary.
The Met Office issued an amber warning for snow and some rare freezing rain affecting most of Wales and central England, including the Midlands and cities like Liverpool and Manchester. This warning kicked in at 6 PM on Saturday and is set to last until midday Sunday.
There’s also a second snow warning for northern England, covering places like Leeds and Sheffield, which started at 9 PM Saturday and will be in effect until midnight Sunday.
They’re expecting about 3 to 7 cm of snow in many areas, and in lower spots, it might mix with rain. Plus, several major roads are closed in the UK, including Woodhead Pass near Greater Manchester.
