Brisbane: So, there’s this former banker, Nicholas John Crilley, who’s in a bit of a pickle. He’s serving multiple life sentences for some truly horrific stuff he did back in 2017. We’re talking about torture and sexual assault that left his victim permanently disfigured.

Even though he pleaded guilty and got sentenced in 2020, he’s now trying to appeal his conviction. But here’s the kicker: his lawyer, Craig Eberhardt, told the court that he’s not even sure if the appeal can go ahead. Apparently, he’s struggling to figure out what Crilley’s actually appealing about.

Crilley’s been getting legal aid to help him out, but it seems like there’s a lot of paperwork to sift through. Eberhardt mentioned he only got a “box of material” recently and is trying to make sense of it all. He can’t promise the court that the appeal will even happen.

What’s even more disturbing is the details of the crime. Crilley kept his victim locked up for over 23 days, subjecting her to all sorts of abuse. It was so bad that when paramedics found her, they thought she was dead until she groaned in pain.

Now, the court is saying it’ll take time to go through all the complaints Crilley has written down. He’s been asked to submit a statement outlining his issues with his former lawyer, and he’s got until March next year to do that. A hearing is set for June, but it sounds like there might be more delays.

During his sentencing, it came out that Crilley was on a drug-fueled binge and had some wild delusions about his victim being involved in a drive-by shooting against him. He ended up with seven life sentences for his crimes, which included torture and rape.

If you or someone you know is dealing with issues related to sexual abuse or family violence, there are resources available to help. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support.
