Bradford: In October 2023, Lee Calvert’s murder and firearms convictions were sent to the Court of Appeal. This was done by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).

Calvert, 23, was convicted for his role in the murder of Barry Selby, 50. Selby was shot in the leg and had acid thrown on him in October 2013. He died three days later in the hospital.

Calvert lived on Stirling Crescent in Holme Wood. He was found guilty along with three others: Joseph Lowther, Robert Woodhead, and Andrew Feather.

His sister, Kelly, plans to attend the hearing with family on February 11.

Calvert’s family has been advocating for his release since his imprisonment in 2014. In July 2016, their appeal was denied by three senior judges.

Kelly believes her brother has an “80 percent chance” of being released after the upcoming hearing. She feels this is a crucial moment for him.

She told the T&A, “He has got an 80 percent chance of walking out of court. It is going to be very big. They have proved that he should not be there.”

Kelly added, “It is quite scary. It is the end of his life now. He either gets out or he doesn’t. This is final now. We have not got another chance after this.”

At the sentencing in June 2014, Mr. Justice Globe confirmed that Calvert fired the gun and poured acid on Selby at his home in East Bowling.

The attack occurred around 2:10 AM on October 14, 2013. Calvert received a life sentence with a minimum of 36 years, later reduced to 32 years.

After the investigation, the CCRC decided to refer the case for a new appeal based on new evidence. A spokesperson for Charter Solicitors expressed delight at this development but noted they could not comment further until the appeal is heard.
