London: On Thursday, Mayor Sadiq Khan put on his ceremonial robes to accept an Honorary Doctorate from the University of East London. It was a big day for him!

The university honored him for his impressive work in leadership and social justice. They also mentioned his efforts to boost business innovation in the city.

This recognition comes right after he was knighted for winning a record third term as London’s mayor. Some critics from the Conservative party called it a “reward for failure,” but Khan is still moving forward.

During the ceremony, the university highlighted his Good Work Standard scheme, which promotes fair employment practices and green investments. They praised him for making London a global business hub, especially after Brexit.

Professor Amanda Broderick, the Vice Chancellor, spoke highly of Khan’s journey, calling it a great example of determination and the power of education. She said his work inspires many, including students and alumni.

Khan expressed his gratitude, saying London is a vibrant place full of opportunities. He acknowledged the university’s role in shaping future leaders who will contribute to a better society.

Born in Tooting to a bus driver, Khan started as a human rights lawyer before entering politics. He became the first Muslim mayor of a major western city in 2016 and has since won two more terms.

Despite his achievements, he faces criticism, especially regarding crime and housing issues in London. Recently, he revealed details about his budget, which includes a rise in council tax.
