Belfast: Sinn Féin wants to light up City Hall for Irish National Day. This day honors the Irish War of Independence and those who died in wars. The proposal comes as loyalists prepare bonfires for the Eleventh Night, a Protestant celebration.
City Hall has an LED lighting system that can mark special occasions. However, the number of requests for illuminations has increased significantly. In recent years, the council has approved many more dates than the original 14.
City Solicitor Nora Largey raised concerns about fairness in the illumination process. She noted that some charities miss out on opportunities. The council is considering a new application system to manage requests better.
At a recent meeting, Sinn Féin councillor Ronan McLaughlin expressed concerns about restricting access to the illuminations. He believes everyone should enjoy the lights. The City Solicitor plans to review the process and report back next month.
