London: The Silvertown Tunnel has been in the works since 2018, aiming to ease traffic at the old Blackwall Tunnel. But not everyone is thrilled about it. Locals worry about more traffic and air pollution.
As the opening day approaches, drivers are eager to know what to expect. So, when’s the big day? Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the tunnel will officially open on April 7, 2025.
This new tunnel will accommodate cars, buses, motorbikes, vans, and even HGVs. Plus, there’s a bike shuttle service for cyclists, which is pretty cool!
Now, let’s talk about the charges. They’ll vary based on your vehicle type and the time you use the tunnel. Charges will kick in from 6 am to 10 pm every day, with peak times during the week from 6 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 7 pm.
For cars and small vans, it’ll cost £4 during peak hours. Motorbikes will pay £2.50, large vans £6.50, and HGVs will be charged £10. Off-peak rates are cheaper, but you’ll need to sign up for TfL’s auto-pay scheme to qualify.
And if you’re a cyclist, the bike shuttle will run every 12 minutes from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm, which is super convenient!
The tunnel will connect the Greenwich Peninsula with East London’s Silvertown district, going under the River Thames. It’s a big step for London’s transport, but let’s see how it all plays out!
