London: The new Silvertown Tunnel is set to open in April, aiming to ease traffic and improve air quality in the city. This 1.4km tunnel includes bus lanes and was first suggested back in 2012, with plans finally approved in 2018.

However, it’s stirred up some debate. Many are upset with Mayor Sadiq Khan, claiming the tolls are too high. Some drivers will have to pay a tenner every time they use it.

Local reactions have been mixed. A petition against what some are calling the “Kent tax” has already gathered over 42,000 signatures. Liam Davis, who started the petition, expressed that the tolls could be a “financial burden” for residents.

This project cost £2.2 billion, funded through a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) that relies on future earnings. Mayor Khan mentioned that the tolls would help pay off the debt.

So, how much will it actually cost drivers? Well, there are different charges depending on the vehicle type. For motorcycles, it’s £1.50 off-peak and £2.50 during peak hours. Cars and small vans will pay £1.50 off-peak and £4.00 during peak times.

Now, who gets to drive for free? There are some discounts available. Low-income residents in 12 boroughs, including Barking & Dagenham and Greenwich, can get a 50% discount. Small businesses and charities in Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Greenwich will also see a £1 discount off the standard off-peak charge for at least a year.

All buses, coaches, and vehicles with nine or more seats registered with the DVLA won’t have to pay. Taxis, blue badge holders, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles registered with TfL are also exempt. Plus, ‘Zero-Emission Capable’ Private Hire Vehicles make up a significant portion of the fleet and won’t be charged either.

Lastly, NHS staff and eligible patients can get their tunnel charges reimbursed through the NHS reimbursement scheme. So, if you’re in London, keep an eye on the latest travel updates!
