Ontario: It looks like we’re in for a warm weekend! A storm system is moving across the Great Lakes, bringing some active weather our way.
The first round of weather is coming from a Texas low over Lake Superior. This will bring warmth and moisture to both southern and northern parts of Ontario.
As this system moves in, we can expect a new low to form along the cold front, which means more warmth and plenty of rain for southern Ontario.
On Saturday, freezing rain might be a concern for northeastern, central, and eastern Ontario. The warm air will mix with the lingering cold, making roads and sidewalks slippery, especially around Sudbury and Bancroft.
For most of the province, rain will take over on Saturday. Temperatures will rise, with the biggest changes happening in the far north. We could see temperatures 5 to 20 degrees above normal, melting away the last bits of snow in the south.
Southern Ontario often experiences holiday melts. In fact, Toronto has only stayed below freezing once between Christmas and New Year’s in the last 20 years, with seven of those years hitting over 10°C.
On Sunday, another system will roll into southern Ontario, bringing even more moisture and a bigger temperature contrast. While northwestern Ontario will cool down, the Greater Toronto Area and eastern Ontario could see double-digit temperatures.
Expect about 30-40 mm of rain across southern Ontario and reaching toward Quebec City, starting in the afternoon.
Overall, temperatures will stay well above average for several days, with southern Ontario and Quebec seeing 5-10 degrees higher, and parts of northern Ontario and Quebec being 10-20 degrees warmer.
