Vannes: A former surgeon is accused of raping nearly 300 children. This happened while they were under anaesthetic over 25 years. It’s one of the biggest child abuse cases in French history.
Joel Le Scouarnec, 73, has already served 15 years for another case. He will face court again this month for new charges. The allegations include over 100 counts of rape and more than 150 counts of sexual assault.
Le Scouarnec reportedly abused children from 1989 to 2014. Many of the incidents occurred in the hospital where he worked. He was finally imprisoned in 2017 after a six-year-old neighbor reported him.
Authorities had warnings about Le Scouarnec’s behavior. An FBI alert warned French officials about his visits to child abuse websites. Despite this, he continued working without any checks.
In 2005, he received a suspended sentence for his actions but faced no job consequences. Even after the health ministry learned of his conviction, they allowed him to keep working.
When arrested, investigators found disturbing items at his home. They discovered child-sized sex dolls and over 300,000 child abuse images. His diaries detailed his actions without any remorse.
Le Scouarnec claimed these writings were just fantasies. However, authorities believe he acted on his victims while they were unconscious during surgeries.
Now, he could face up to 20 years in prison for these new charges. This case has raised serious concerns about how the system failed to protect children.
