Southampton: A couple, Milli-Lou Barron and Ashley Penny, faced court for stealing toys. They took items worth £3,887.86 from Smyths Toys Store. Their theft spree lasted a month, targeting the store multiple times.

Despite the rise in shoplifting in the city, they avoided jail. The Office of National Statistics reported a 25% increase in shoplifting cases in Southampton. In 2022, there were 1,884 incidents, which jumped to 3,580 in 2024.

Chief Inspector Marcus Cator emphasized that tackling shoplifting is a priority. Southampton has the highest shoplifting rates in Hampshire. Nearby Eastleigh also saw a significant rise, with a 37% increase from 2023 to 2024.

Barron and Penny were caught filling bags with toys and leaving without paying. They pleaded guilty to 16 counts of theft each. Barron received a community order and must pay £1,726.11 in compensation. Penny also got a community order and owes £1,894.93.

Other areas like Fareham and the New Forest reported increases in shoplifting too. In Fareham, incidents rose from 370 in 2022 to 649 in 2024. The New Forest saw a 73% increase over three years.

In July 2024, most shoplifting incidents occurred at supermarkets and petrol stations. Thief Kelly Loader admitted to stealing from various shops, including B&M and Little Waitrose. She will return to court in April.

Hampshire police have launched a dedicated city center team to tackle shoplifting. They aim to use effective tactics to address the issue. Chief Inspector Cator noted that while offenses are rising, police actions against offenders are also increasing.

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones praised the force for their efforts. She highlighted a 151% increase in actions taken against shoplifters from November 2023 to November 2024. Hampshire Constabulary was recognized as the best force for responding to retail crime.

Local leaders expressed concern over the rise in shoplifting. Councillor Marie Finn noted the impact on retail staff and small businesses. She emphasized the need for safety in the workplace. Councillor Jeremy Moulton acknowledged the problem but expressed confidence in the police’s efforts to address it.
