County Durham: There’s been a huge jump in the number of registered sex offenders in England and Wales. The latest stats show that the number has nearly doubled in just over a decade.

As of March 2024, there are 70,052 registered sex offenders across the police force areas. That’s about one offender for every 763 people aged 10 and older. It’s a 2.5% increase from last year, making it the highest number ever recorded.

Back in 2010, there were only 36,921 offenders. The Ministry of Justice released these figures, which include those managed by Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) to help prevent further crimes.

These offenders must keep the police updated on their details, and if anything changes, they have to notify them again. There’s even a new interactive map that shows where the highest concentrations of offenders are located.

For instance, County Durham has 1,123 offenders, which is about 196 for every 100,000 people. That’s the highest ratio in the country. Gwent and Teesside follow closely behind.

On the flip side, Hertfordshire has the lowest ratio, with one offender for every 1,266 people. Surrey and London also have lower ratios compared to other areas.

The report, released on October 31, 2024, highlights that the number of offenders managed under MAPPA continues to rise each year. This increase is largely due to more convictions for sexual offenses and efforts to prosecute more rape cases.

It’s a concerning trend, and the report suggests that we might see even more offenders in the future as these patterns continue. The data shows that all categories of offenders are on the rise, which is alarming for communities.
