Shields: Great news for ferry users! The Shields Ferry is bringing back its evening services after some crew availability hiccups. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster since last November when they faced unexpected staffing issues.

Nexus, the company behind the ferry, has decided to resume the river crossings starting Monday, January 20. They had to make some tough calls back in November, as their managing director, Cathy Massarella, mentioned they explored every option to keep the night services running.

She explained that they were hit hard by long-term sickness among the small crew. With limited funding, they couldn’t just hire a bunch of extra staff, so cutting back on services was the best way to ensure commuters could still cross the Tyne during peak times.

Now that the crew situation is sorted, the ferry timetable is back to normal. A spokesperson for Nexus expressed gratitude to customers for their patience during the disruption. Evening crossings will run from Monday to Saturday, with services going until 8 PM from Monday to Wednesday and until 10:40 PM from Thursday to Saturday. Sunday services remain unchanged, running from 10:15 AM to 6 PM.
