Mandurah: A teenager named Zachary Hlaing was surfing at Pyramids Beach when he had a close encounter with a shark. It was just after dawn, around 4:35 am, when the 2-meter shark bit his leg and foot.

Zachary described the moment as surreal. He felt the shark grab his leg and shake him a bit before letting go. “It all happened so fast,” he said, recalling the big splash and the shark swimming away.

In shock, he and his friends paddled back to shore without much thought. Fellow surfer Jay Reeves heard Zachary’s shout and quickly paddled to get his car. He helped Zachary to the car, wrapping a towel around his bleeding leg.

Jay praised Zachary for staying calm throughout the ordeal. “He was just the most calm, collected person you’ve ever met,” he said. Despite the injury, Zachary is eager to get back in the water soon.

“I’ve been surfing my whole life because my dad got me into it,” he shared. “I might avoid that spot for a bit, but I’ll be back out there as soon as I can.”
