San Francisco: So, Kyle Shanahan is really pushing the idea that NFL coaches need to be flexible. He’s all about adapting to get the best out of his players. And honestly, he’s right.
He mentioned that coaching is all about finding ways to adjust week by week. Some changes are obvious, while others are more subtle. But nothing stays the same for long, he said.
Before the 49ers headed to Miami for their Week 16 game, Shanahan stressed that you can’t just stick to one game plan. You have to consider what players you have and what they can do best.
This season has been a bit of a rollercoaster for the 49ers. They’ve had to switch things up on offense, especially since they’ve been missing key players like Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk.
Despite that, the 49ers are still putting up decent numbers, ranking eighth in total offensive yards. But they’re sitting at 16th in points scored, which shows there’s room for improvement.
Shanahan also pointed out how they had to change their offensive style at the start of the 2022 season when Trey Lance was the starter. They focused more on a quarterback-driven run game, which was a big shift.
He recalled how he had to adapt his coaching style when he moved from the Texans to Washington. It wasn’t about reinventing the wheel; it was about figuring out what worked best for the players he had.
In his words, if you want to succeed in the NFL, you’ve got to be ready to adjust. Otherwise, you’ll only thrive when everything is perfect, and that’s just not realistic.
