San Francisco: So, Dre Greenlaw was on the field for just a few plays before he had to sit out due to a calf injury during the 49ers’ game against the Dolphins. It was a tough loss, 29-17, and now there’s some concern about whether he’ll be able to play in the last two games of the season.
Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that they’re still figuring things out. Greenlaw’s calf issue isn’t on the leg that had the Achilles surgery, but it’s the same leg that gave him trouble last year. Shanahan’s gut feeling is that they might have to shut him down, but they’ll wait to see how Greenlaw feels.
It’s a tricky situation. They want to protect him from further injury, but they also know how much he wants to play. Greenlaw has been a solid player since he joined the team, and he’s looking to prove he’s healthy enough for a good contract when he becomes a free agent in 2025.
Shanahan explained that it’s important for Greenlaw to get back on the field if he’s ready. He wants to show everyone he’s back in action. But they have to be careful not to rush things and risk his future.
In his last game against the Rams, Greenlaw was a standout, making eight tackles before he had to leave due to knee soreness. His teammates felt his energy on the field, and it was clear how much they missed him when he wasn’t there.
Shanahan praised Greenlaw’s journey back from injury, saying it’s been emotional for him. He’s worked hard to get to this point, and it’s been inspiring to watch. But when they had to tell him he couldn’t go back in against Miami, it hit him hard because he’s eager to get back to playing.
Both Nick Bosa and Fred Warner spoke up about how much they admire Greenlaw’s passion. They want him to succeed but also recognize the need to protect him from pushing too hard too soon.
As the team takes a few days off, they’ll regroup to prepare for the Lions in Week 17. Shanahan is going to give Greenlaw the time he needs to make the right call about his health and availability.
It’s a balancing act, and while Greenlaw’s heart is in the game, they want to make sure he’s making the best decision for his future.
