NORTH TEXAS: Shallie Bey Jr. recently shared a framed proclamation from the U.S. Treasury Department. It’s a reminder of his time as the head of the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia from 1978 to 1981.

During his tenure, he introduced the Susan B. Anthony coin and made significant improvements in plant safety, overseeing the production of billions of coins.

Bey credits President Jimmy Carter for believing in him. “He gave me the chance to do it,” Bey said, reflecting on the support he received.

At just 29, Bey became the youngest and first African American to manage the U.S. Mint. Later, Carter nominated him again to lead the Philadelphia Federal Executive Board, coordinating efforts among numerous agencies.

“I was just 29, and I was advising admirals and generals. They took my advice seriously, which was an incredible experience,” Bey recalled.

He also fondly remembers attending a White House event with his wife, where Carter and his team went out of their way to ensure their comfort, especially with a child on the way.

Bey appreciated how Carter prioritized diversity and inclusion during his presidency. “He cared about everyone having a chance,” Bey noted, emphasizing Carter’s commitment to unity.
