Yorkshire: It’s pretty alarming how many sex offenders are living in Yorkshire these days. The numbers have nearly doubled in just over a decade, which is a big deal.

According to the latest stats from the Ministry of Justice, there are more sex offenders in England and Wales than ever before. In fact, the total has shot up to about 70,052 registered offenders across the country.

In West Yorkshire alone, there are 3,451 registered offenders, which means there’s one for every 606 people aged 10 and up. South Yorkshire isn’t far behind with 1,818, or one for every 680 people.

North Yorkshire has 937 offenders, translating to one for every 800 people, while Humberside has 1,449, or one for every 581 people. It’s a lot to take in.

These numbers have gone up by 2.5% since last year, and it’s the highest we’ve ever seen. Back in 2010-2011, there were only 36,921 registered offenders, so you can see how much things have changed.

Most of these offenders are monitored through special arrangements to help prevent future crimes. They have to keep the police updated on their details, which is part of being on the sex offenders register.

Interestingly, County Durham has the highest proportion of offenders, with one for every 510 people. On the flip side, Herefordshire has the lowest, with one for every 1,266 people.
