Durham: The city is gearing up for some major roadworks that will last about seven weeks. Starting from the bus station, the work will stretch towards Crossgate Peth. They’re planning to remove temporary bus stops and spruce up the footpaths and street furniture.

This project aims to give the North Road area a facelift and make the roads and paths around the new bus station much better.

The work kicked off on Monday, January 13, and is part of a two-phase plan from Durham County Council. The first phase wrapped up in October 2024.

To keep things running smoothly, the council has promised to put up traffic signs to help reduce any disruption.

In the second phase, they’ll focus on Crossgate Peth, North Road, and Milburngate, which will take a total of seven weeks.

During this time, buses will only be able to turn left when leaving the station.

Oh, and just a heads up: some bus services will have to change their routes while the work is going on. They’ll be putting up notices to keep passengers in the loop.

A spokesperson for Go North East mentioned that the next phase of the North Road and Millburngate refurbishment will kick off on January 13 and will last for several weeks. Buses won’t be able to stop at Millburngate during weekdays, so folks should catch their buses from the bus station instead.

On weekends, though, buses will run their usual routes and serve stops at Millburngate.

Anthea Smith, who manages highway services for Durham County Council, said the work is part of a plan to modernize the North Road area. They want to make a great first impression for visitors, starting from the bus station and heading towards Crossgate Peth.

They’ll also be resurfacing North Road, including Crossgate Peth and the route to Milburngate roundabout. This should help attract more residents, visitors, and shoppers to the city, boosting Durham’s reputation as a lively place to visit.
