West Lothian: So, they’ve decided to start charging service fees for temporary tenancies. This is all part of an effort to manage the rising costs linked to homelessness.

The council is looking to standardize rent and service charges, which have been covered by council funds until now. It’s a big change, and not everyone is on board.

SNP councillors are pretty upset, claiming this move unfairly hits the most vulnerable folks in the community. They voted against the new charges, saying it’s just not right.

Right now, West Lothian is facing a £1.5 million overspend on its homeless budget. Most councils already charge for temporary tenancies, but West Lothian has held off until now.

The new charges will include a base service fee of £43.90 a week, which covers things like furniture storage. Some councillors are worried this will be a heavy burden for people who are already struggling.

Councillor Willie Boyle pointed out that many of those in temporary housing are working people who’ve lost their homes due to landlords leaving the private rental market.

Despite the pushback, the council approved the new charges. They’re hoping this will ease some of the financial strain on their housing services, which have been under pressure due to rising demand.

The changes won’t affect regular council housing rents, which are set through the annual budget process. Plus, the housing need and Advice Shop services will still be there to help tenants navigate these changes and avoid financial hardship.

Overall, this move is meant to align West Lothian with other councils in Scotland, aiming to recover costs for temporary accommodation and provide the necessary support for those in need.
