Los Angeles: Jason Oppenheim, the real estate star from ‘Selling Sunset,’ is really upset with landlords taking advantage of the wildfire situation. He pointed out that hotels are packed, and many people are left without a place to stay.
He shared how heartbreaking it is to see locals in distress, with tears in their eyes as they lose their homes and belongings to the flames. What really gets him riled up is how some landlords are trying to profit from this disaster, ignoring California’s laws against price gouging.
During an interview, he recounted a story about a client who wanted to rent a house for $13,000 a month. The client even offered $20,000 upfront, but the landlord still wanted $23,000. Oppenheim called this behavior not just wrong but also illegal, emphasizing that it’s not the time to exploit people in crisis.
He did some homework on the law and found out that landlords can’t charge more than 10% above pre-disaster rates. It’s a tough situation, and he can’t believe how parts of LA have been devastated. He mentioned areas like Altadena, where hardworking folks have lost everything.
Despite the massive damage, which he estimates could reach $50 to $100 billion, he remains hopeful. He believes the community will bounce back stronger than ever. The wildfires have already claimed 16 lives, and firefighters are working hard to control the flames before strong winds make things worse.
As of now, 150,000 people in LA County are under evacuation orders, and shelters are filling up fast. The response teams include firefighters from California and other states, with thousands of personnel on the ground to tackle this crisis.
