Wick: The Seafarers Memorial at Braehead is a beautiful tribute to those lost at sea. The volunteers behind it are truly touched by the support from local businesses and the community.

Willie Watt, the chairman of the Seafarers Memorial Group, shared how amazed they were by the generosity shown for the monument unveiled in May 2023. It’s not just a statue; it’s a reminder of the sea’s dangers for future generations.

During a recent meeting, Mr. Watt spoke about the fundraising journey and how the memorial was designed and built. It symbolizes the dual nature of the sea, giving and taking away. They wanted something meaningful that would offer peace and reflection.

The memorial honors all seafarers, not just fishermen, from the WK vessel registration area. It covers 79 harbors where many have ventured out to fish or transport goods. They’re even thinking about creating a pamphlet to highlight these harbors for visitors.

This year, they hope to add lighting to the memorial. Mr. Watt expressed immense gratitude for the local companies that contributed. He said it was a fantastic community effort, and the support they received was truly overwhelming.

He also reflected on the tragic Black Saturday disaster in 1848, where a storm took the lives of 37 fishermen. It was a significant event that had never been properly commemorated until now.

The memorial stands tall at five meters, featuring a figure holding a haddock and surrounded by lecterns that tell stories of maritime life. It’s made with local materials, including engraved Caithness stone slabs that honor Black Saturday.

This memorial has become a central point for events like the National Fishing Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday. It’s a place for the community to gather and remember those who have been lost at sea.
