Vancouver: So, it turns out sea levels are creeping up, and it’s a big deal for Canada. A recent study found that over three million Canadians could face coastal flooding by 2100. That’s a lot of people!
This study, done by MyChoice Financial Inc., looked at which communities are most at risk. And guess what? Some major cities made the list. It’s pretty alarming.
According to the World Meteorological Organization, sea levels have been rising at about 4.77 mm a year from 2014 to 2023. The Atlantic coast of Canada is expected to see the biggest changes.
What’s causing this? Well, it’s mainly due to warmer ocean temperatures and melting ice caps in the Arctic and Antarctic. Both are contributing to the rising waters.
So, how bad could it get for Canadians? The study suggests that in a worst-case scenario, Metro Vancouver could see a rise of 125 cm by 2100. That’s huge! Many homes near the coast are at risk.
And it’s not just Vancouver. Halifax could also face serious flooding risks with over one-and-a-half meters of sea level rise. That’s a lot of water!
Matt Roberts, COO of MyChoice, emphasized the need for Canadians, especially those living near the coast, to be aware of these risks. It’s a wake-up call!
To help with this, Environment and Climate Change Canada is expanding its coastal flooding prediction program. They want to keep everyone informed about potential flooding events.
So, it’s clear that we need to pay attention to these warnings. The future could be quite different if we don’t take action now.
