WASHINGTON: So, Scott Turner, the former Texas state rep, is making waves. He’s been nominated by Trump to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development. During his Senate confirmation hearing, he didn’t hold back. He said HUD is failing at its core mission.
Turner pointed out that HUD is supposed to create strong communities and support affordable housing. But he stressed that we’re in a housing crisis right now. It’s a big deal, and he’s ready to tackle it.
Once Trump officially nominates him, the Senate will vote on his confirmation. Turner has a background in politics and even played in the NFL for a while. He’s got experience, but he’s also faced some challenges in his career.
Interestingly, he’s been against some affordable housing bills in Texas and has called welfare “dangerous.” If he gets confirmed, he’ll be in charge of a lot of housing issues, including homelessness.
During the hearing, both sides of the aisle agreed that the U.S. is in a housing crisis. We’re short about 5 million housing units, and prices have skyrocketed. Homelessness is also on the rise.
Senator Tim Scott praised Turner, saying he’s the solution we need. But there’s a catch. The new administration wants to cut government spending, which could limit Turner’s ability to make changes.
When asked about investing more in affordable housing, Turner seemed hesitant. He thinks the current budget is already high and wants to maximize it instead of adding more funds.
Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed concern about this approach. She wants to see more help for local communities trying to build affordable housing.
Turner shared his plan to encourage more housing development by easing regulations. He believes that fees and zoning rules are holding back affordable housing projects.
He also mentioned that construction costs could drop if we get our finances in order. Plus, he supports expanding the opportunity zone initiative, which offers tax benefits for investors in low-income areas.
Senator Scott, who helped create this program, gave it a thumbs up. But Senator Mark Warner thinks it needs to focus more on small businesses as it’s up for renewal soon.
Turner didn’t give clear answers about replacing career staff with political appointees or firing a large number of government employees. He did say he’d review the HUD team to ensure they’re the right fit.
He plans to take stock of HUD’s programs and policies to streamline things. Throughout the hearing, he shared personal stories about his family’s struggles with homelessness and adversity, emphasizing why he’s passionate about this role.
