East Kilbride: A mother is relieved after her daughter’s predator was jailed. Andrew Cunningham, 36, offered cash for sexual favors. He received a 20-month sentence at Hamilton Sheriff Court and will be on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.
Sheriff Louise Gallacher called Cunningham’s actions “highly disturbing.” The girl’s mother shared how this has devastated her daughter. She mentioned that her child’s life spiraled out of control, leading to self-harm and substance abuse.
After the sentencing, the mother said she was proud of her daughter for testifying. She hopes her daughter can start to heal and regain her childhood. Cunningham sent the girl numerous texts and suggested they meet in a hotel.
Prosecutor Rebecca Clark revealed Cunningham’s messages, asking the girl to prostitute herself. He denied the charges but was found guilty. The offences occurred in 2023, and the girl’s mother described how her daughter’s innocence was stolen.
She explained that her daughter felt guilty and confused. The mother noted that her child became withdrawn and struggled with trust. Cunningham’s actions have left lasting emotional scars on the girl.
In court, Cunningham claimed he didn’t send the messages. He suggested someone else could have used his phone. However, evidence showed he had contacted the girl multiple times, offering her alcohol and money.
His defense lawyer argued for a community payback order, but the sheriff was concerned about Cunningham’s attitude. She stated that without accepting responsibility, he posed a risk of re-offending. Custody was the only option available.
