Troon: The MV Glen Sannox has finally set sail after a long wait. It kicked off its first passenger trip early Monday, leaving Troon and heading to Brodick on the Isle of Arran.

This ferry has been a hot topic in Scotland for years, with delays and costs spiraling out of control. Originally, it was supposed to cost around £97 million, but now it’s over £400 million. Yikes!

Launched back in 2017 by Nicola Sturgeon, the ship wasn’t even close to being ready at that time. They even had painted windows during the launch. Talk about a rough start!

Built by Ferguson Marine, the Glen Sannox is the first of several new vessels meant to boost Scotland’s ferry services. It can carry a good number of passengers and vehicles, which is a big deal for the island.

On its first trip, it had 104 foot passengers and a mix of cars and commercial vehicles. That’s a solid start!

CalMac’s chief, Duncan Mackison, expressed excitement about the ferry’s entry into service. He believes it will really help the islanders by improving capacity and service.

But not everyone is celebrating. The Scottish Conservatives pointed out that there are still issues with Ardrossan harbour, which could affect travel times and convenience for passengers.

So, while the Glen Sannox is finally sailing, there are still some bumps in the road ahead for Scotland’s ferry services.
