But beneath it all lies the Yellowstone supervolcano, a fascinating yet concerning natural wonder.
For years, people have been buzzing about when this volcano might blow, and the internet is full of theories. Sure, past eruptions have been pretty catastrophic, but experts say we probably won’t see another major event in our lifetimes.
Right now, there’s no sign that an eruption is on the horizon. However, researchers have recently figured out where the next one is likely to happen.
They’ve been studying the electrical conductivity of magma beneath the surface. This research helps them identify where the most magma is stored in Yellowstone.
According to a study published in Nature, the next eruption is expected to occur in the northeastern part of the park.
In that area, they found a mix of different types of magma. The basaltic melt, which is deeper and more fluid, is moving toward a pocket of rhyolitic magma in the northeast.
This deeper melt could heat up the rhyolitic magma above it over time. If enough pressure builds up, we could see another eruption down the line.
Interestingly, other magma pockets around the volcano don’t connect to this deeper melt, meaning they’re likely to cool off and won’t erupt.
So, while the Yellowstone supervolcano is a hot topic, it seems we can breathe a little easier for now.
