Cardiff: A sadist named Jeffrey Gafoor has been released from prison. He killed a 20-year-old call girl named Lynette White on Valentine’s Day in 1988. Her family is worried about his freedom.
Gafoor, now 59, served 21 years for Lynette’s murder. He stabbed her over 50 times during a brutal attack at her flat. This case is one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British history.
Five men, known as the Cardiff Five, were wrongly convicted for her murder. They spent years in prison before their convictions were overturned. Gafoor was finally caught in 2003 due to DNA evidence.
Despite his life sentence, he was released last week. The Ministry of Justice confirmed his release, stating he will be on strict probation for life. Lynette’s family expressed their fears about his return to society.
They said they dread to think about anyone who might encounter him. They are especially concerned since he is excluded from a county in southern England but could still be anywhere.
Gafoor was held in an open prison since 2020 and was granted day release earlier this year. His parole hearing took place in October, but Lynette’s family could not attend.
John Actie, one of the wrongly accused men, shared his ongoing pain from the case. He spent two years in custody before being acquitted. The trauma from the wrongful conviction still affects him today.
Witnesses had seen a white man near the crime scene, but police focused on the wrong suspects. This led to years of suffering for the innocent men involved.
Now, with Gafoor free, Lynette’s family and the community are left to grapple with the reality of his release and the memories of the past.
