Devonport: Royal Navy tugboat and marine services crews are facing a strike ballot. This comes amid safety concerns about their work.

Unite, the union representing the workers, says they are being excluded from important discussions. They worry this could compromise safety.

The crews work at several locations, including Portsmouth and Faslane. They are employed by Serco Marine, which is negotiating a new contract with the Ministry of Defence.

These crews handle the movement of nuclear submarines and other naval vessels. They ensure safe operations in and out of ports.

Unite warns that proposed service changes could affect their ability to provide round-the-clock service. This includes critical operations for the fleet.

They want to be part of discussions about these changes, as they have been in the past. Their experience is vital for safe operations at sea.

About 300 crew members are being balloted, starting February 3 for two weeks. Their roles also include transporting passengers and delivering essential supplies.

Unite’s national officer expressed concerns that the new contract might not meet operational needs. The dispute may escalate if meaningful talks don’t happen soon.

Serco expressed disappointment over the strike ballot. They are still in talks with the MoD about the new contract and will keep union members informed.

The Ministry of Defence stated that operational priorities will remain unaffected during any potential strike. They are ready to assist in resolving the issue if needed.
