Royal Bolton Hospital reintroduces face masks to stop spread of infection

Bolton: The Royal Bolton Hospital is stepping up its game against the flu. They’re bringing back face masks to help keep everyone safe. Recently, the hospital has seen a surge in flu cases, with 42 patients admitted just last week. That’s a big jump from the usual seven in September.

Starting today, everyone—staff, patients, and visitors—will need to wear fluid-repellent surgical masks in inpatient areas. It’s a precaution to help stop the spread of the virus. Tyrone Roberts, the chief nursing officer, emphasized the importance of this measure. He mentioned that flu can be serious for some people, so they’re asking for everyone’s cooperation.

The hospital will keep an eye on the situation and review the mask policy as flu cases hopefully decline. They’ve got plenty of masks available, and they’ve shared some tips on how to wear them properly. It’s all about covering your nose and mouth and not reusing them.

In addition, NHS frontline workers are being offered both COVID-19 and flu vaccines. The hospital is also encouraging everyone in Bolton to get their flu shots. There’s a handy online service to find local pharmacies offering free vaccinations, available until March 2025.

Dr. Francis Andrews, the medical director, noted that many patients needing treatment are unvaccinated. The flu situation is serious, with national data showing a concerning rise in hospitalizations. It’s definitely a time to be cautious and take care of our health.
