Canterbury: A tragic incident unfolded at a fruit farm where a music argument turned deadly. Ion Niculae, a 51-year-old worker, was fatally punched by 20-year-old Robert Onicala.

The altercation happened during a celebration for Orthodox Easter at Mansfields fruit farm. It all started when the music volume became a point of contention between Niculae and Onicala’s brother, Alexandru.

Things escalated quickly. Alexandru slapped Niculae, and in a moment of rage, Robert delivered a powerful punch that knocked Niculae out cold. Sadly, he never regained consciousness.

Witnesses described the scene, noting how the argument erupted among the workers gathered outside their caravans. It was supposed to be a fun day with BBQs and dancing, but it all went horribly wrong.

After the punch, Niculae was found unconscious, and despite paramedics’ efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem revealed he had suffered a brain hemorrhage and a fractured chin bone from the blow.

Robert was arrested and initially charged with attempted murder but later pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He claimed he acted out of a desire to protect his brother, but the judge pointed out that his actions were reckless.

During sentencing, the judge emphasized that the violence was unnecessary and that the situation could have been handled without aggression. Robert was sentenced to four years in prison, and he may face deportation after serving his time.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a celebration can turn into tragedy over something as trivial as music volume.
