Mashpee: A fire broke out at Mashpee Middle-High School, leading to a big evacuation. About 700 students had to leave the building on Monday morning.

The fire was spotted around 9 a.m. on the gym roof by a janitor. Thankfully, no students were in the gym at the time.

The cause of the fire is still a mystery, but firefighters were on the scene well into the afternoon.

By 9:25 a.m., school buses showed up to take the evacuated students to Quashnet School nearby. Parents picked up their kids there, or they were sent home like a regular school day.

Even though around 700 students were evacuated, there was no smoke visible from the road. A police car was blocking the school entrance, and officers were at Quashnet School, where some students were hanging out outside.
