El Paso: A caring mentor and community leader, Judge Maria Salas-Mendoza was recently honored as the chief justice of the Texas Eighth Court of Appeals. She’s been a vital part of the El Paso community for over 20 years.

During her swearing-in ceremony on January 10, 2025, at the Enrique Moreno County Courthouse, she took on this prestigious role, overseeing appeals in 17 counties, including El Paso. The ceremony was emotional, with over 100 attendees, including judges, local leaders, and family. Salas-Mendoza shared that her journey is bittersweet, especially after losing her mother recently. She expressed her love for the trial bench and her desire to continue serving the community while being there for her family.

Salas-Mendoza has always been a role model, especially for women in law. Former colleagues praised her dedication to mentoring future generations. She’s worked hard to encourage women to pursue careers in the legal field, navigating challenges herself along the way.

Her legacy includes founding Texas Latinx Judges and serving on various committees to promote diversity in the judiciary. Salas-Mendoza is committed to helping women achieve their goals in law, believing that a little encouragement can go a long way.

She’s always looking for ways to support others, whether it’s a young student or a fellow lawyer. “It only takes one person to say, ‘no, you can do it,’” she said, reflecting on her own journey and the importance of mentorship.
