HONOLULU: So, there’s some construction happening at Diamond Head, and it’s all about making things safer for everyone. You know, that iconic spot where tourists love to hike? Yeah, they’re working on it.
People living nearby have noticed some bright lights coming from the tunnel entrance. It’s got them curious, but not everyone wants to chat about it on camera.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources is behind this project, which kicked off on January 6. They’re focusing on shoring up the area around the tunnel entrance to prevent any rockfalls.
Richard Turbin, a local board member, mentioned that safety is a big deal. He said it would be tragic if a rock fell on a tourist or a local. That’s definitely something we all want to avoid.
They had to close the hike back in May 2024 after some heavy rains caused minor rockslides. Now, they’re working hard to fix things up.
The project is expected to wrap up around July 25, 2025, but it might take a bit longer. While they’re working, the hours for hiking are being cut back.
During the week, the park will close at 2 p.m. instead of 6 p.m., which is a bummer for those who like to hike later. The last reservation for a weekday hike will be at noon.
Closing early helps the workers get things done at night without bothering anyone’s sleep. Turbin reassured folks that the work would stop by 10 p.m., so it shouldn’t be too disruptive.
Let’s just hope everything goes smoothly and that Diamond Head remains a safe and beautiful spot for everyone to enjoy!
